Event Information

Rakugo performers impersonate all sorts of characters --men, women, and children, creating different identities with different voices and body language. Their only props are a fan and a towel, but they evoke a wide world of both familiar and quirky characters with virtuosic skill.

Our featured performer is Hayashiya HIKOICHI, making his American debut exclusively at PSU. His plays will include two favorites. Chiri-tote-chin will have you laughing as some poor neighbors trick their wealthy landlord into eating spoiled tofu, and enjoying it! Another play, Hatsu Tenjin (First Market Day) features all sorts of shenanigans at a crowded festival market. Performances will be in Japanese with English subtitles. This event is a part of Portland State of Mind (October 12-21, 2017).
