Pauline Viardot, accomplished mezzo soprano, pianist and composer of the late 19th century wrote over 100 vocal compositions, including five operettas. Her famous music salon was credited for launching the careers of Camille Saint-Säens, Jules Massenet, Gabriel Fauré, and Charles Gounod. Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn and Georges Sand were among her many admirers and friends. The charming music of her Cinderella embodies a time of German lieder and French mélodies. PSU Opera will present the operetta in English.

Pauline Viardot's music salons were called Le Théâtre des Pommes de Terre or the Potato Theater.  Guests were invited to bring this humble vegetable as the price of admission. Why name a theater after such a humble vegetable? Because when you are hungry, a single potato can be a veritable feast. So, as you join us for an evening or afternoon of operatic entertainment, we invite you to bring a can of food that will be donated to the Portland State University Food Pantry.
