Mischief and Mayhem: Comic Kyôgen Farce ( in English )

Presented by: The Center for Japanese Studies, The School of Music, The Department of World Languages and Literatures.

Join PSU student performers in a lively romp through the world of medieval Japanese daily and not-so-daily life.  Kyôgen plays are all about physical comedy, exaggeration, and the overturning of social norms.  Husbands and wives never get along harmoniously in kyôgen plays, but in The Fortified Beard, a husband-wife spat escalates into fully armed samurai combat.  In Tied to a Pole a stingy master ties up his servants, hoping this will prevent them from drinking his sake while he’s away.  Of course it doesn’t work.  Gods and monsters inhabited old Japan, and their relations with humans are fraught indeed.  See what transpires when a haughty mountain wizard encounters a crab yôkai, and when the thunder god falls from the sky…right beside an incompetent acupuncture doctor!

Three plays are in English, one is in Japanese, and the program features several dances, as well as taiko drumming numbers by the PSU Taiko Ensemble.  It is high-energy entertainment from beginning to end.  The cast includes six veterans of last spring’s gala PSU kabuki show.  Beautiful costumes are designed and dressed by Toshimi Tanaka.

Kyôgen director: Larry Kominz
Taiko director: Wynn Kiyama
