Chloe Bass

FREE Dinner and Performance-Lecture

This Is A Film (1.4) explores what it means to turn footage into language. Using clips of family home movies found in various online archives, Chloë Bass creates a descriptive piece for the audience to hear and imagine. Where is the film: in the language? In the images that come into each listener's head? Is it shared between us? What do we see, and how does it make a story?

This Is A Film is part of Chloë Bass' ongoing project "Obligation To Others Holds Me In My Place," a study of intimacy at the scale of the immediate family. Previous projects have studied intimacy between a person and theirself (The Bureau of Self-Recognition, 2011 - 2013), and between partners (The Book of Everyday Instruction, 2015 - 2018).

Chloe Bass is a multiform conceptual artist working in performance, situation, conversation, publication, and installation. Her work investigates the potential of the everyday as a catalyst for intimacy. Bass's work has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, BOMB, Temporary Art Review, and Artnews. She is an Assistant Professor of Art at CUNY.

6pm: Dinner will be served by Grandmother's(s) Kitchen, an artist project that explores the mixed cultural heritage of Artist Michael Bernard Stevenson Jr.. Michael prepares food for gatherings to evoke the feeling of seeing distant relatives for the first time in months, or watching football on Thanksgiving as the smell of five turkeys drifts into the living room, or your grandmother making your favorite meal, just for you.

Performance lecture at 6:30pm

This event is sponsored by the Social Practice Club and the PSU Speakers Board.
